In the interests of highlighting some of the ancient influences on The Shepherd graphic novel series, let’s turn our attention to Plato’s the Myth of Er from The Republic, Book 10. The story focuses on the experience of the soul in the afterlife, seen through the eyes of Er, son of Armenius, who is a Pamphylian (i.e., modern western Turkey). Er is a soldier and has fought and fallen in a great battle. Twelve days have passed since his death. Shockingly, Er suddenly awakens as he is laid on the funeral pyre...and BOY, does he have a story to tell!

Andrea Lorenzo Molinari, Ph.D. is co-writer/ co-creator of The Shepherd, a five-volume, ongoing OGN series. From early-2020 through March 2025, Molinari served as editorial director for Scout Comics, and had the pleasure of working with many creative teams from around the world. Previously, he worked as a submissions editor/ project editor for Caliber Comics, as an editor for Amigo Comics (Málaga, Spain), and has edited books subsequently published by Action Lab Entertainment, Sumerian, Second Sight, Cosmic Times, and the Canadian publisher Lev Gleason's New Friday Comics. All told he has edited well over 240+ IPs.
